Hello, and Welcome to the Dopamine Cafe! Have a seat, and look over your menu. We truly have so many options to choose from!
Okay, all jokes aside. Who doesn’t love dopamine? Oftentimes dopamine is referred to as the “happy hormone” or the “feel-good hormone”, and that is because dopamine is released in the part of the brain that is the reward center. Dopamine is released when we are doing pleasurable activities, such as eating, having sex, hanging out with a friend, or even just by putting on a cute outfit. Dopamine also helps us set goals, concentrate and stay on task, and of course contributes to our sense of well-being and happiness!
So, what is a dopamine menu? Basically, we are breaking down all the activities that we can do to release dopamine, and separating them into categories as if you were at a restaurant. Appetizers, Entrees, Desserts, Sides, and Specials!
I am not sure about you, but when I am in a funk, or in a bad mood, I tend to forget about everything that I could to make myself feel better, and then I feel stuck and stagnant. However, having a physical ‘menu’ of all the things I love to do hanging up somewhere that i can read everyday, I know I am much more likely to stay focused on the things that make me happy and bring me joy.
Mood-Boosting Starters
Alright, picture this, we have just arrived at The Dopamine Cafe, and we are feeling so hungry, and need something to munch on right now. We immediately scan the appetizer list, and put in our order. The reason we do this is because we know that an appetizer is a dish that will come out quickly. With your first section of your dopamine menu, think about fast activities that make you feel good, lasting between 1 to 5 minutes.
Examples;
- 2-minute gratitude journal.
- Sunlight break
- Play your favorite song.
- Deep breathing
- Quick stretch
- Compliment someone
- Drink some tea
- Give your pet some love.
Feel-Good Main Courses
We dove into our appetizers, and now we feel a little more grounded so we can decide on our Entrees! Now, let’s think about a main course. Normally its something that takes more time, but you feel more full and satisfied afterwards. That is exactly what we are going for in this section, that satiated feeling of being filled up, and having a bigger release of dopamine. These activities do take longer, anywhere from 20 minutes to multiple hours.
Examples:
- Going for a walk
- Take a workout class or a yoga class
- Cook a meal you love
- Take an everything shower/a bath
- Make art (paint, draw, crochet, etc.)
- Practice an instrument
- Journal or write poetry
- Hangout with friends
Nourishing Sides
Let’s think about sides as something we can pair with our entrees, or even our appetizers. Something very quick, but we know will bring us a little joy.
Examples:
- Listening to music, or a podcast
- Light a candle
- Turn on a diffuser
- Call a friend
- Pull a tarot/affirmation card
- Make your bed
Delightful Desserts
Desserts are a treat, something that we might not have everyday, or that we tend to crave after the main course. Think of something you love to treat yourself with, whether that’s actually a little something sweet, or drinks with friends. Just like how too much sugar isn’t good for us, these activities should be done in moderation.
Examples:
- Scroll on social media
- Play video games
- Order takeout
- Shopping for yourself
- Drinks with friends
- An actual sweet treat
Specials
Ah, specials, something we don’t have everyday, and may even experience only once. However, the best part of these activities, is that sometimes we can still feel the dopamine release for years to come because we have wonderful memories from the experiences!
Examples:
- Book a vacation
- Going to a concert
- See a comedy show
- Buy a new outfit
- Take an art class
- Swim in the ocean, a lake, or river
- Get a massage or facial.
Final Sips of Joy: Closing Thoughts
Your dopamine menu isn’t just a list – it’s a love letter to your future self, it’s a way of saying “I matter, I choose joy, and my pleasure is sacred.” The beauty of this menu is that it is completely yours. Customize it. Romanticize it. Revisit when you feel stuck, numb, or disconnected from your magic.
Think of it as your soul’s little cafe – always open, always ready to serve up something sweet and satisfying.
So light that candle, queue up your favorite songs, and get ready to feel joy flood in.
Here are some examples of dopamine menus from pinterest. But you can make your own on Canva, or even bust out some paper and markers and fully make your own!
